A Tree Ring Watch is an ideal reminder of the stoic way. Decades of a tree's annual growth rings are featured in each watch, juxtaposed against seconds and minutes. A tree and its annual growth rings embody the four stoic virtues of wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance (moderation).
Moderation: The tree takes up only what it needs. The trees used to craft these watches grew slowly putting on narrow ring after narrow ring. It is these tight growth rings that make the tree strong. A tree that grows too quickly with wide rings will be weak. As the stoics knew there is strength in moderation.
Wisdom: Trees teach us to be patient, stand tall yet remain grounded, and let go of things that are no longer needed, like senescent leaves.
Courage: Day after day, without flight or fear a tree stands its ground to extreme temperatures, storms, and insect attacks.
Justice: Trees exemplify the stoic virtue of kindness and fairness by sharing resources with other trees via their roots, occurring sometimes even among different tree species.
The Stoic Watch dials are crafted from thin slices of small Douglas-fir trees harvested from forests of western Montana. The thick bark, a metaphor for you stoic practice, protects a tree against cold, heat, wounds, etc. Likewise your frame of mind keeps negative events from disrupting your tranquility. Seneca occasionally wrote about trees:
Seneca, On Providence
"Why, then, do you wonder that good men are shaken in order that they may grow strong? No tree becomes rooted and sturdy unless many a wind assails it. For by its very tossing it tightens its grip and plants its roots more securely; the fragile trees are those that have grown in a sunny valley. It is, therefore, to the advantage even of good men, to the end that they may be unafraid, to live constantly amidst alarms and to bear with patience the happenings which are ills to him only who ill supports them."
Even long living trees meet their end. The bountiful years represented by wider rings, ultimately at some point are followed by narrow rings and or death, reminding us that as Marcus Aurelius wrote “I was once a fortunate man but at some point fortune abandoned me."
